I used my scuttle for basically the first time today. I had a puck of soap in there that I wanted to try, and that was basically the only reason. I used it just to load the brush before lathering a cream really.
With a scuttle or with a bowl that is large enough just for a puck of soap, I understand people will load their brush then continue with face lathering. I think some move to a bowl, not sure how well that'd do. I'm assuming well enough as people are doing it.
Okay, so on my scuttle, I had wet the puck and pressed it firmly into place, then it dried and was "stuck" in there. It stayed that way for pretty much the whole time I was loading my brush. However, as it got wetter it released its grip and was just swirling about.
Is this normal? Is there a better way to secure it? I hear about melting and pouring, but it'd pour through the holes in the scuttle? Do I just let it dry into place knowing it will loosen its grip as it is wet? That's fine by me, I won't have to worry about getting it out of there when the time comes. I just don't know how this stuff is supposed to be is all.
I keep my soaps in other containers and just use the scuttle to keep my brush warm. As you said I do face lather, between passes I lay the loaded brush on the scuttle. I not only fill the scuttle with hot (tap) water but I fill the sink and place the scuttle in it.
I always have nice warm lather for 2-3 passes or more.
Just my thoughts,

All shaves are good shaves, some are just better than others.
I have the old school scuttle that is designed to hold a puck of soap. I could not let my brush lay there during a pass. It would fall over. If it stays in the scuttle, it will be in water, as the only place it will fit is in the side where the water spout is. On top, where the soap puck lies, it will not fit.
BTW, I'm looking to get one like you have...which do you have?
