I was chatting with Irena of Ginger Gardens the other day and learned that she is working on a tallow-based shaving soap. Tallow soaps are becoming harder to find and I am eagerly anticipating her new creation.

I will be trying some of her soaps here in the near future.

What is tallow?  Why is it good? Or you like it?

Irena can weigh in on this more than I can as she is the soap expert. My understanding is that tallow is made from animal fat. It may sound gross but it adds cushion to shaving soaps. All of the Hard soaps such as D.R. Harris, Mitchell's Wool Fat and Tabac contain tallow which IMHO greatly increases their performance. These hard soaps also last a very long time.

Many manufacturers are starting to eliminate tallow in their shaving soaps due to pressure from special interest groups.  For instance, the Erasmic shave stick used to be tallow based and now it is glycerin based. Many wet shavers do not care for the reformulated soaps and prefer the original recipe. Of course YMMV

Soaps made with tallow give you a nice rich and creamy feel with good conditioning properties. I have 2 tallow based batches curing on my curing rack. They should be ready in about 2 weeks. If anyone would like a sample, just send me a PM.

You're right; it's getting harder and harder to find tallow based soaps. There seems to be some negative connotation using this ingredient; especially with the "granola" crowd. It does make a great soap though.

I love the tallow based soaps.

Thank you for keeping them going Irena.

You're welcome. Tallow based soaps rock. Lot of people don't know what they are missing.

Very true! I just cannot get into the Glycerin based soaps. Although they may smell great, they just do not provide enough cushion for my taste. While there are a few excellent vegetable based soaps (Cyril Salter, Trumper), these are the exception.

The batch of tallow shaving sticks have now all been sold. Thank you! I hope to make another batch this Tuesday. I prefer to let them cure for at least 2 weeks. As soon as they are cured, I'll let you all know.
